Wednesday's Woody Williams
The name Woody Williams is one I see fairly frequently. There is a baseball field in Huntington and a bridge about a mile from where I live named after another Woody Williams, Marine and Medal of Honor recipient Hershel Woodrow Williams. This Woody also had ties to San Diego, going through basic and advanced training in America's Finest City. When in Iwo Jima in 1945, Williams went above and beyond the call of duty by going across enemy lines and facing down machine gun fire and bayonets for four hours while mowing down the opposition with a flamethrower. Yeah. A flamethrower. Now 88 years old and living back in the area, Williams appeared on the Discovery Channel show Son of Guns last year. The episode consisted of restoring the flamethrower he used and concluded with him firing it once again, 66 years later. Charmed life, indeed.
